Our Story
For Abbi Schieber-Bundze, teaching children to swim has never been about creating great swimmers, it has always been about saving lives.
As the Founder of Schieber Swim School and Executive Director of the Schieber Swim Foundation, Abbi has dedicated her career to giving children the confidence and skills they need to be safe in and around the water. Since opening Schieber Swim School, she has taught more than 8,000 children, helping families build a foundation of confidence through measurable, evidence-based instruction that prioritizes safety before strokes.
Abbi's love for the water began as an infant, at five years old she joined the swim team, which led to a four-year collegiate swimming career at Northern Michigan University. She spent years teaching lessons throughout high school and college, but becoming a mother transformed her perspective. She realized that many children were spending years in swim lessons without learning the skills that could save their lives in a real emergency.
That realization became her mission.
Today, Schieber Swim School is built on one simple belief: every child deserves access to high-quality instruction that prepares them for the unexpected. Through the Foundations First™ Swim Framework, every skill is intentionally taught, measured, and built upon so children gain not only swimming ability, but the confidence to respond in an emergency.
As the school has grown, so has the vision.
Abbi now spends much of her time developing curriculum, training instructors, expanding scholarship opportunities through the Schieber Swim Foundation, and working with organizations that share a commitment to reducing childhood drowning. Her goal is not simply to teach more children herself, but to equip more instructors to teach with excellence so that lifesaving lessons become more accessible to families everywhere.
At the heart of everything she does is a simple conviction:

Whether working with infants, fearful beginners, children with special needs, or future competitive swimmers, Abbi believes confidence is built through trust, consistency, and purposeful instruction.
Because swimming is more than a sport.
It's a life skill.

We have served over 5000 children in the Midland area since 2019. We also specialize in working with children with Autism spectrum disorder, Sensory processing disorder, and Down syndrome, and a wide range of physical disabilities.
